Chiasma Newsletter July 2024

Kia ora everyone and welcome to the Chiasma National newsletter for July 2024!
This will provide a snapshot of Chiasma across the country each month as well as bringing you the latest updates, alumni stories and news in the wider STEM fields. We hope that this will be a useful addition to Chiasma and we encourage you to reach out to us to provide feedback or suggestions for the newsletter.

For now, we hope you enjoy this newsletter and wherever you are in the country we hope you enjoy the Chiasma events on offer to you this year!

Chiasma Auckland

Chiasma Auckland are excited to be hosting our flagship careers expo Synapse, providing Students with the opportunity to connect to industry, alongside releasing a database tool to help students make the most of the opportunities that they’re given with these companies!

As Synapse gets closer and closer, make sure you’ve got the tickets to be part of our biggest event!

Chiasma Wellington

Clubs Expo, workshops, and Synapse—Chiasma Wellington has a legendary lineup this trimester! Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat at Clubs Expo, we had so much fun engaging with enthusiastic students and handing out free merch and goodies. Next week, we’re excited to host our Networking Workshop on July 17th.

Our incredible guest speakers—Danielle Blud, Dr. Maddie White, and Alice Hodder—will guide attendees through the fundamentals of networking in an interactive, round-table experience. This workshop promises to be the perfect preparation for Synapse 2024, which is less than a month away. This year’s theme, “Future Frontiers: A Journey to 2050,” offers a night of exploration of the future of STEM, with inspiring guest speakers, networking opportunities, and STEM industry booths. Mark your calendars for August 1st and get ready for an unforgettable event!

Chiasma Dunedin

In the past month, Chiasma Dunedin has been busy preparing and gearing up for our biggest event of the year, Synapse!

With a new venue compared to previous years, we hope this year’s Synapse will be as successful as ever.

The ‘must check-out’ section!

We heard from our alumni Sam Clarke, who was the Industry Co-Lead (Auckland) about his experience with Chiasma and what he is up to now!

Hi, my name is Sam Clarke and I currently work as an engineer and analyst for Ternary Kinetics. My work revolves around assisting in the design, building and modelling of our sustainable technology as we look to develop a sustainable liquid energy source.

I was lucky enough to land this position through my role as co-lead of Chiasma’s industry team in 2023. I joined Chiasma at the end of 2022 after attending their incredible Synapse event. It was here that I was inspired to join the Mint Innovation team as an intern which hatched my passion for using science and engineering to solve challenging problems (“deep tech”). My role
in the team leads me to meet numerous engaging academics, entrepreneurs and others from industry, including Sean Molloy (co-founder of Ternary Kinetics)!

Throughout my time at Chiasma it was a privilege to contribute to the overall goal of bridging the gap between students and industry. The events we put on throughout the year – in particular Synapse – were definitely highlights of this time. The chance to both support and learn from these events was invaluable.
I couldn’t recommend Chiasma highly enough as a club or community to join. The opportunity to connect and engage with interesting and stimulating people and topics is the perfect setting to explore what you want from your career and life.
